The energy department is in charge of formulating policies related to the energy sector in line with the legislative framework of the Republic of Maldives. It strengthens international cooperation to boost both investment and know-how in the sector and is committed to raise awareness on energy resources and consumption. The department is divided in two sections – Policy and Sector Development, and Energy Technology Development. These are a total of 6 Units functioning under these two Sections.

1) Policy and Sector Development :

The policy and sector development section implements laws and regulations and formulates strategies in the energy sector. The unit is also tasked with identifying and supplying the most convenient energy sources to meet the domestic demand as well as managing carbon-neutral policies. The section is the focal point to prepare, support, and assist the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The CDM allows emission-reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These CERs can be traded and sold, and used by industrialised countries to a meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.

The section comprises of three units: Energy and Policy Strategy, International Development, and Energy Development.

2) Energy Technology Development:

The energy technology development section aims at limiting energy misuse and waste. It advises the government and legal sectors on efficient energy use, on low-carbon development strategies, and renewable energy technologies. With regards to the latter, the section collects data on renewable sources available in the Maldives, it develops the know-how in the fields, and implements relevant projects.

The section comprises of three units: Energy Use Management, Renewable Energy Technology, and Projects and Programmes.
