Project

Support for the Climate Neutrality Strategy of the Maldives

01 Jan 2011

The programme’s primary objective is to build up the capacity and the know-how of public institutions (i.e. relevant Ministeries, energy suppliers) as well as the private sector (i.e. private companies, resort developers) to develop their own comprehensive strategies for minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing adequate activities. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) within the framework of the Ministry’s International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Alongside training courses and ad-hoc seminars, the project installed diesel-solar hybrid systems on two pilot islands, Khudahuvadhoo and Ungoofaaru, and handed them over to local operators. By the end of 2014, the port lighting on both islands was converted to energy-efficient LED technology. Experts also advice the Ministry in drafting its roadmap to reduce gas emissions that will be handed over to the government for its legislative phase. The Ministry implemented one measure in the energy-efficient use of air conditioners. Various measures to raise awareness and provide training, as well as networking at international conferences, have allowed the government to improve its international position on climate issues.
