The validation workshop for the Maldives’ First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) preparation was conducted today, marking a significant step in tracking the country’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Funded by the Global Environment Facility and supported by UN Environment, the First BTR will enable the Maldives to report on its climate actions and progress.
The objective of the workshop was to review and validate key components of the before submission. The workshop opened with remarks by Mr. Ahmed Waheed, Director of the Climate Change Department, followed by an overview of the BTR development process from Ms. Fathimath Raufa Moosa, Project Technical Coordinator of BTR Project. Subsequent sessions included presentations on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory by Mr. Ali Shareef, NDC tracking by Mr. Zammath Khaleel, information on adaptation by Mr. Moosa Zameer, and tracking support needed and received by Mr. Thibyan Ibrahim.
A total of 47 participants including national experts from various public and private organizations, NGOs, attended and engaged in the discussions held in the workshop. These include the President’s Office, Maldives Meteorological Service, Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ministry of Youth, Empowerment, Information and Arts, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Health Protection Agency, National Disaster Management Authority, Fuel Supplies Maldives, Maldives Airports Company, MWSC, STELCO, and relevant department of the Ministry.
Adopted at COP21 in December 2015, the Paris Agreement seeks to limit global warming to well below 2°C, aiming for 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Under this framework, signatory countries are expected to submit Biennial Transparency Reports every two years, starting from December 2024. The Ministry plans to submit the First BTR at COP29 in November 2024.
