Stakeholder Consultation on Adaptation Tracking and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) Held in Sh. Funadhoo

26 Dec 2024

A stakeholder consultation workshop on Adaptation Tracking and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) was successfully held in Sh. Funadhoo on 26th December 2024. The workshop was conducted under the Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives) project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The event brought together 20 participants from various public organizations and local stakeholders, including the Funadhoo Council, Sh. Atoll Hospital, FENAKA, Funadhoo Airport, and Sh. Atoll Council. Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Ahmed Waheed from the Climate Change Department (CCD), who highlighted the importance of stakeholder collaboration in addressing climate challenges and achieving the Maldives’ sustainability goals.

The objective of the workshop was to facilitate discussions and gather stakeholder input on the development of adaptation tracking focused on the agriculture sector. The feedback from this consultation will contribute to developing indicators and tools for tracking adaptation in agriculture.

Additionally, the workshop provided an overview of the Maldives’ climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, progress on the 2020 NDC, and introduced the NDC 3.0 process, focusing on strengthening adaptation, mitigation, and addressing barriers to effective implementation and coordination. The workshop also gathered views on sectoral priorities to be included in the NDC 3.0, ensuring that the process is inclusive and reflective of stakeholder input.

By aligning with the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement, the CBIT Maldives project aims to strengthen institutional arrangements, streamline data collection and processing, and improve methodologies for GHG inventories, adaptation tracking, and climate finance reporting. These efforts will ensure transparent reporting to the UNFCCC and enhance national decision-making to tackle climate change effectively.
