Inception workshop held for supporting vulnerable communities manage water shortages underway

Supporting vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate change induced water shortages project to establish integrated water supply system in 4 islands and rainwater harvesting system in 45 islands has been signed between Ministry of Environment and Energy and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project focus on supporting vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate-induced water shortages and through this project safe and adequate water supply systems will be developed in 49 islands by means Integrated Water Supply Network and Rainwater Harvesting Systems. Apart from the infrastructure components it also involves capacity building for water sector. The project document outlines the project management plan and project related information which specifies how the project will be undertaken at activities level, project management unit, ways in assisting the regulatory bodies and service providers to improve the quality of the service and the ways to strengthen the legal frameworks of these sectors. Similarly, the document also focus on human resource development of the through sector specific training.

As part of the project, an inception workshop will be held from 7 to 9 August 2017, to identify and formalize implementation arrangements along with the project work plan and activities through stakeholder involvement from all relevant authorities and agencies.

The project is financed by Green Climate Fund and a total of USD 23,636,000.00 will be invested to complete this project.

The project will be implemented by Ministry of Environment and Energy as an implementing agency and UNDP will be responsible to provide a three –tier oversight and quality assurance role involving UNDP Country Offices, regional and headquarters levels. Similarly, UNDP is responsible for monitoring the project activities to ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with the guidelines which align with the quality assurance indicators. UNDP is also assigned to monitor financial resources and accounting to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial reports and prepare the Annual Project Report and submit the final report to the Project Board. GCF has approved a fee of USD 2,127,272.76 to ensure that UNDP undertakes project monitoring and quality assurance role assigned to them.

In order to expedite the works of the project, the Government of Maldives has already started the Design works of HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, Sh. Foakaidhoo, B. Dharavandhoo and R. Maduvvaree water supply system and the design work will be completed by the end of August 2017. Similarly, the consultancy service for the design and supervision of 45 islands rainwater harvesting system has been awarded to a consultant during the month of July, 2017.
