Maldives Submits First Biennial Transparency Report to UNFCCC

17 Nov 2024

The Republic of Maldives has submitted its First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), fulfilling its commitment under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF). The Maldives is the third Small Island Developing State (SIDS) to submit its BTR, which provides a comprehensive overview of the Maldives’ greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation and adaptation efforts, progress in implementing its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and information on support needs and support received for undertaking climate actions.

In recognition of this submission, the Maldives was honored with the BTR Champion Certificate, acknowledging the nation’s commitment to global climate action and transparency.

The preparation of this report was undertaken by the Climate Change Department, in a collaborative effort involving extensive consultations with various stakeholders. These stakeholders include government ministries, private sector entities, non-governmental organizations, and international partners. Their invaluable contributions ensured the report’s comprehensiveness and submission ahead of the 31st December 2024 deadline.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, H.E. Thoriq Ibrahim, stated, “The submission of our first BTR marks a significant milestone in our climate journey. It reflects our unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing climate change. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders whose support was instrumental in this achievement.”

The development of the Maldives’ First BTR was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the “Preparation of Initial Biennial Transparency Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Maldives BTR 1 Project)” project with support from the United Nations Environment Programme.
