Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on NDC 3.0 Formulation Held

10 Dec 2024

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy (MCCEE) successfully conducted the second stakeholder workshop on the formulation of the Maldives’ third Climate Action Plan, the Third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) under the Paris Agreement. The workshop aimed to gather input from diverse stakeholders to identify and strategize the Maldives’ climate action priorities for the next five to ten years. The first stakeholder consultation for NDC 3.0 was held on 24th October 2024 in Fuvahmulah City.

The workshop brought together representatives from all relevant policy agencies. Opening remarks were delivered by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Ajwad Mustafa, who emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration in addressing climate change and achieving the NDC targets. The session also included a presentation on the Maldives’ current NDC targets and commitments, as well as an overview of the NDC 3.0 formulation process.

The primary objectives of the workshop were:

  • To provide an overview of the Maldives’ existing climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the progress made in implementing the NDC 2020.
  • To introduce the NDC 3.0 formulation process and outline its goals, focusing on strengthening adaptation and mitigation measures.
  • To gather input on critical priority areas, such as legislation, policies, research, technology, data collection, capacity building, and finance.
  • To identify barriers and pathways to enhance NDC implementation and sectoral coordination.

Participants engaged in facilitated group discussions, divided into thematic areas focusing on Adaptation and Mitigation, where they explored priority actions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resilience, and overcoming barriers to implementation. Afternoon discussions centered on strategies to improve coordination among sectors and strengthen institutional mechanisms for delivering the NDC 3.0 targets.

The outcomes of the discussions and stakeholder feedback will be synthesized to inform the drafting of NDC 3.0, ensuring it reflects national priorities and addresses emerging challenges. The finalized NDC 3.0 document is scheduled for submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2025.
