Training on Energy Statistics and Energy Balance Conducted

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy successfully conducted the Training on Energy Statistics and Energy Balance. The training was organized under the Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives) Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The training was officially opened by Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy, who highlighted the significance of energy statistics in shaping national policies and tracking mitigation efforts.

The training aimed to enhance stakeholder capacity in energy statistics and energy balance preparation, improve data collection methodologies and tools, and ensure alignment with the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement. It was targeted at professionals involved in energy data management, climate change mitigation, energy planning, GHG inventory development, and tracking Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

A total of 24 (18 male, 6 female) participants attended the training, representing key institutions and stakeholders, including the Climate Change Department and Energy Department of the Ministry, Utility Regulatory Authority, Housing Development Corporation, FENAKA Corporation, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Dhiraagu, Maldives Airports Company Limited, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private sector companies.

The training was conducted by experts from the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association (SLEMA) and Epoch Associates Pvt Ltd, the training covered the fundamentals of energy statistics, including the importance of energy data, types of energy commodities, reporting frequencies, and energy balance components. Practical exercises were conducted on developing energy balances, along with methodologies for quantifying climate impacts of energy systems, including emissions calculations and their relevance to GHG inventories and NDC tracking. The training also focused on data collection and validation techniques, emphasizing best practices, tools, and methods to improve accuracy in energy data management and reporting.

At the closing ceremony, certificates were awarded to participants by Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy. In his closing remarks, he expressed appreciation to the participants for their engagement and acknowledged the contributions of the CBIT Project Management Unit, SLEMA, and Epoch Associates Pvt Ltd.

This training is part of ongoing capacity-building efforts under the CBIT Maldives Project. Strengthening institutional mechanisms for GHG inventory compilation, energy data management, and NDC tracking remains a key priority for enhancing transparency and meeting the Maldives’ climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
