The Ministry of Tourism and Environment hosted a workshop today on Climate Adaptation Efforts and Strategies for adaptation sector stakeholders. The workshop was focused on sharing the Maldives’ Third Climate Action Plan, specifically on the adaptation section of the plan. This Maldives’ Third Climate Action Plan outlines the Maldives’ strategies for advancing climate action and strengthening resilience against climate change impacts. As part of the Maldives’ commitment under the Paris Agreement, the Third National Climate Action Plan will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The workshop commenced with opening remarks from Mr. Amjad Abdulla, Director General of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry. In his address, Mr. Amjad highlighted the Ministry’s extensive efforts over the past year in developing the Climate Action Plan, which involved broad stakeholder engagement both in Malé and across the country. He emphasized the necessity of a whole-of-society approach, requiring the active participation and support of all stakeholders. He highlighted the crucial role of the international community, in securing financing, technology, capacity building, and other means of implementation to achieve the targets set out in the action plan. Mr. Amjad further stressed that the Climate Action Plan serves as a guiding framework for climate action in the Maldives and that efforts will be made to mainstream and widely disseminate the plan.
Following the opening remarks, participants engaged in detailed technical presentations by the Climate Change Department of the Ministry. These presentations covered the development process of plan and strategies for climate adaptation across key sectors, including Agriculture and Food Security, Water Security, Infrastructure Resilience, Coastal Protection, Public Health, Coral Reefs and Biodiversity, Tourism, Fisheries, Early Warning Systems, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and Loss and Damage. The department provided an overview of each sector and associated strategies to advance efforts in these areas.
The workshop also featured presentations on cross-cutting areas essential for the effective implementation of the Climate Action Plan. These areas were identified as crucial in ensuring the successful execution of adaptation strategies and the mitigation target set in the plan. An engaging question-and-answer session followed the presentations, allowing participants to provide feedback and comments on the Climate Action Plan.
In his closing remarks, Director General Amjad Abdulla reaffirmed the importance of continued stakeholder collaboration in achieving the targets outlined in the Climate Action Plan. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their valuable contributions throughout the plan’s development and encouraged their continued engagement during the implementation phase. Mr. Amjad reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the international community to secure the necessary support for achieving the plan’s objectives.
