A national roundtable on sustainable consumption and production was held at the Customs Building on 24th November 2016. “The National Dialogue on Sustainable Consumption and Production” was a one day meeting aimed at mainstreaming sustainable consumption and production within government policies.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Policy Dialogue, Minister of State for Environment and Energy Abdulla Ziyad noted that governments around the world face multiple challenges in achieving sustainable development goals. Mr Ziyad also highlighted the importance of sustainable consumption and production in meeting the SDGs and noted the importance of the participation of all stakeholders in this process.
This national dialogue will feed into the development of a National Action Plan for SCP in the Maldives. In this regard, participants engaged in a discussion on identifying priority sectors as well as actions that will be required in developing a National Action Plan. Participants noted the need for a transformative and holistic approach in promoting sustainable consumption and production in the Maldives.
Stakeholders who participated in this workshop were representatives from government agencies, civil service and academia.
This workshop is organized by the Ministry of Environment and Energy with support from UNEP. Representatives from the government agencies, industry, academia and civil society participated in the discussions.
