Session conducted to disseminate findings of “Research on Consumer Behavior and Preference Regarding Energy Efficiency in Households”

Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) conducted a session to disseminate the findings of “Research on Consumer Behavior and Preferences Regarding Energy Efficiency in Households”. Participants from The session, held at Asaree Hall, SHE building on 22nd May 2017, was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mr. Abdul Matheen Mohamed. In his remarks he highlighted the successful campaigns and projects conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and emphasized the importance of active participation of the public at an individual level, to attain the maximum benefits of energy efficiency. Ms. Soffoora Kausar from Rayan Private Limited shared the findings of the research. 20 participants from 9 stakeholders participated in the workshop.
The contract to conduct the research was signed between the Ministry and Riyan Private limited on 31st October 2016. The research was conducted as the first step to identify key information in a household regarding energy efficiency, to determine the perception of the general public regarding energy efficiency in Maldives. The findings of this research will assist the MEE in designing future policy instruments, projects and programs related to energy efficiency and conduct related consumer awareness campaigns. Information was collected from 1894 households from 6 different locations of the Maldives. This includes, HaaDhaal. Kulhudhuffushi, AlifDhaal. Dhidhoo, GaafAlif. Nilandhoo, K. Maafushi, Greater Male’ Area and Addu Atoll main stretch (Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-feydhoo and Hithadhoo).

This activity is carried out by “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” project, which is implemented by Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) assisted by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and financed by Government of Maldives and Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency in the building sector, increasing energy efficiency in the building sector by developing appropriate policies, guidelines and standards.
