High Level workshop on Preparing Roadmap on Low Carbon Development of Energy Sector in Maldives conducted was conducted today at Bandos Island Resort, Maldives. This workshop was inaugurated by Minister of Environment and Energy, Honorable Thoriq Ibrahim. In his remarks, he said that the government has an objective to install renewable energy at least up to 30 percent of the daytime demand of electricity in all inhabited islands before the end of 2018. He also highlighted that recently, 500,000 LED tube lights have been distributed to households, government institutions and non-governmental organizations.
The main objective of this workshop is to reduce the country’s dependency on fossil fuel and replace 70% of fossil fuel used with cleaner energy by the year 2020. The objectives of preparing the roadmap includes promoting of renewable energy use, adoption of energy efficiency measures, development of sectoral laws and regulations, institutional strengthening as well as technical capacity building of the sector professionals.
In this workshop 50 participants from Asian Development Bank (ADB) mission and other stakeholder companies participated.
