A booklet on Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) ‘What you do for small islands, you do for the world’ was launched today by Minister of Environment and Energy, Honorable Thoriq Ibrahim, at a ceremony held at the Ministry this morning. Senior officials of the Ministry have also participated in this ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Honorable Thoriq Ibrahim said that Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the Fifth assessment report on climate change in October and Maldives being the Chair of AOSIS, highly contributed to this report and highlighted the importance of this report to AOSIS member countries.
Maldives ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016, urging big polluters to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, Maldives along with other small islands states lobbied to keep global temperature rises to 1.5 degree Celsius. Also, the agreement includes getting financial aid to mitigate issues on climate change and keep global temperature rises to 1.5 degree Celsius.
In the past four years, a total of 16 participants were trained in New York under AOSIS fellowship program, including 04 Maldivian participants.
