Kick-off Meeting Held to Begin Implementation of National Certificate III in Plumbing Training Programme for Water Sector Professionals

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy (MCCEE) on 13th July 2026 held a kick-off meeting with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) to begin the implementation of the National Certificate III in Plumbing training programme for water sector professionals.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry's Water and Sanitation Department, representatives from GIZ and MIT. Discussions focused on the implementation work plan, training schedule, participant selection process, and coordination arrangements to ensure the successful delivery of the programme.
The training is being implemented under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Project, "Strengthening the Water Sector for Enhanced Planning, Programming and Implementation of Climate Finance in the Republic of Maldives," with financial support from the Green Climate Fund and technical assistance from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The project aims to strengthen institutional and technical capacity within the water sector, improve strategic planning, and enhance the country's ability to implement climate-resilient water and sanitation initiative.
Under the project, GIZ has contracted the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) to deliver the National Certificate III in Plumbing training programme. The programme is fully funded through the GCF Readiness Project and will provide nationally accredited training to a minimum of 40 participants from the Water and Sanitation Department, utility companies, and other relevant institutions.
The training forms part of the project's broader objective of strengthening technical capacity within the Maldives' water sector. By enhancing the knowledge and practical skills of water sector personnel in plumbing and water system operations, the programme will contribute to improving the quality, sustainability, and climate resilience of water and sanitation services across the country. It also supports the GCF Readiness Project's objective of strengthening the technical capacity of water sector personnel in water and sanitation management.
