Maldives, UAE advance energy and waste management cooperation

HULHUMALÉ, Maldives — The Maldives and the United Arab Emirates advanced talks on expanding bilateral cooperation in energy and waste management, with both sides identifying potential investments and technical partnerships to support the island nation’s climate-resilient development.
State Minister Mohamed Faiz led a delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy in a meeting with UAE Chargé d’Affaires Heba Aljneibi in Hulhumalé.

The Maldivian delegation presented updates on the country’s energy supply, renewable energy deployment and waste management programs, including ongoing projects, implementation milestones and future infrastructure requirements.
The discussions focused on moving cooperation toward practical initiatives in renewable energy, waste-to-energy development and integrated waste management.
Technical assistance, knowledge transfer, pilot programs and public-private partnerships were also identified as possible areas for collaboration.

Minister Faiz said closer cooperation with the UAE is important for the Maldives as it works to reduce its dependence on imported fuel, improve waste services across dispersed islands and build infrastructure capable of withstanding climate-related pressures.
The UAE’s experience in developing large-scale renewable energy projects, waste-to-energy facilities and modern waste management systems could support the Maldives in accelerating projects, mobilizing investment and adopting technologies suited to its geographic conditions.
The meeting builds on existing cooperation between the two countries.
Officials from both sides expressed support for translating the discussions into concrete projects that would strengthen bilateral relations while advancing energy security, sustainable waste management and climate resilience in the Maldives.
