Maldives Advances a proposal for Climate-Resilient Schools Through Stakeholder Validation

Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development (MoEHESD) has endorsed a proposal on Climate Resilient Schools to submit for Green Climate Fund (GCF) support.
The concept was endorsed at a meeting held on 18 August 2026 in partnership with UNICEF as the Accredited Entity for the proposed project. The validation meeting brought together key government institutions, development partners, utilities and the GCF Secretariat to review the proposed project concept and ensure alignment with national priorities and GCF requirements.
The meeting was co- chaired by Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, Minister of State for Education and Mr. Amjad Abdulla, Director General of the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and NDA. Representatives from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, UNICEF, National Disaster Management Authority, STELCO, FENAKA, Utility Regulatory Authority and the GCF Secretariat participated in the meeting. The session included an overview of the concept note development process, followed by a detailed presentation of the proposed project concept by UNICEF. Participants then engaged in a discussion and question-and-answer session to provide feedback on the proposed project components and implementation approach.

The validation process also focused on confirming key decisions, including validation of the concept note, endorsement of its submission by the Government of Maldives.
The endorsement forms an important step towards the development of a GCF project to make the education sector climate-resilient. The collaborative validation process will support the incorporation of stakeholder feedback and strengthen the alignment of the proposed initiative with national priorities and the GCF’s requirements.
