Ministry Signs MoU for 15 MW Solar PV System and 15 MWh Battery Energy Storage System

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd. to develop a 15-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system and a 15-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Maldives.
The MoU was signed on 19 October in a signing ceremony held in Saafu Raajje building by Deputy Minister Hussain Ageel Naseer on behalf of the Ministry and Vice President Mr. Dongting He on behalf of Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd.
The agreement marks a significant step towards strengthening the Maldives’ renewable energy infrastructure by expanding solar power generation capacity and enhancing energy storage capabilities. The integration of solar PV system with a battery energy storage system is expected to support more efficient utilisation of renewable energy and contribute to improved stability and reliability of the electricity grid.

The initiative aligns with the Maldives’ broader efforts to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, and strengthen long-term energy security. By increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix, the project will support the country’s climate commitments while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy sector.
The collaboration with Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd. also represents an opportunity to advance the development of clean energy infrastructure and support the Maldives’ target of generating 33% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2028.
Through initiatives such as this, the Ministry continues to advance efforts to diversify the country’s energy sources, improve grid performance, and promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies as part of the Maldives’ transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
